Women with eating disorders have been targeted by predatory men in Facebook groups that encourage anorexia and bulimia.
An investigation by The Times has found that “pro-anorexia” and “pro-bulimia” communities have been operating freely on the social media site and are not always shut down when reported. The groups provide harmful advice on extreme weight loss and photographs of emaciated bodies as “thinspiration”. The groups appear mostly to be for women. Members include girls as young as 13 and some members are in clear need of medical support.
Vulnerable users of such sites have reported unwanted male attention and sexual requests.
One man who says he is a registered nurse with an eating disorder is on multiple Facebook groups and until recently ran his own.
