To help tackle the problem of obesity in Malacca, Kolej Universiti Islam Melaka (KUIM) is organising a 50-Day Weight Loss Challenge programme.
KUIM, in a statement said the programme, in collaboration with the office of the Teluk Mas Assembly Development and Coordination Committee (Japerun) has attracted the participation of 150 people.
The programme started on Dec 12 – participants had their weight and height recorded during a ceremony launched by state Education, Higher Education, Science and Technology, Green Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Noor Effendi Ahmad and attended by KUIM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Taib Dora.
“The programme is receiving a very encouraging response. It is aimed at nurturing a healthy lifestyle and raising awareness of the health dangers of obesity.
“The participants are divided into 10 groups, each group will be guided by a facilitator from KUIM’s Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences,” according to the statement.
Among the activities during the 50-day period are physical activities such as aerodance, fun rides and fun runs as well as online health talks.
A cash prize of RM6,000 awaits the participant who manages to lose the most weight, the statement said.
The programme is divided into four categories:men weighing more than 90 kg, men weighing less than 90 kg as well as women weighing more than 90 kg and less than 90 kg.
“On the 50th day, their weight will be measured again to determine the winners.
“This pilot programme will be implemented on a larger scale and targeted manner in the future,” it said. – Bernama
